Ultrasound

An ultrasound, also known as a sonogram, is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the body.

Ultrasounds are used for a range of diagnostics and monitoring procedures. This includes monitoring health and development of a baby during pregnancy, and diagnosis of conditions that affect soft tissue such as organs, glands and blood vessels.

What happens during an ultrasound?

A probe called a ‘transducer’ is placed on the skin, or inside a body opening. A gel is then applied to the skin to help the sound waves to be transmitted, and the reflected sound makes an image.
