Cardiac MRI

St Joseph’s Hospital is home to the latest technology in Cardiac MRI scanning, with a MAGNETOM Sola 1.5T MRI scanner from Siemens Healthineers. The scanner is considered the ‘gold standard’ for evaluating heart function and size.

A Cardiac MRI can help assess heart function, identify heart rhythm disorders, congenital heart disease, and tumours. The results will be used by our expert radiology team to plan appropriate treatment.

What happens during a Cardiac MRI?

You will be asked to remove any metal objects, such as jewellery, belts, hearing aids or piercings. You’ll need to empty your pockets too.

During the MRI process you will lie on a table inside a large, tubular scanner. You’ll need to lie as still as possible so that our radiology team can get a clear image of the chest.

The MRI scanner makes loud noises and tapping sounds, so you may be offered headphones to wear during the process to protect your ears. You will be given a call button whilst in the scanner, allowing you to call the radiographer to stop the scan if you need any assistance. The radiographer will talk you through the process before it begins, ensuring you understand how it all works and that you are calm and comfortable.

A cardiac MRI can take anywhere between 60 – 90 minutes.
