Our History
St Joseph’s Hospital was founded by the Sisters of St Joseph of Annecy in 1946, two years before the birth of the NHS.
The story of St Joseph’s Hospital began during the second world war when the founding sisters committed to bringing health and care to the people of a growing community.
The first surgical operation took place in February 1946 when St Joseph’s Nursing Home officially opened, a phrase coined by the government of the time to describe hospitals. Claremont House had just 16 beds and 314 patients in the first year.
Now, over 75 years later St Joseph’s Hospital is an expectional hospital welcoming over 20,000 patients a year. The Sisters of St Joseph of Annecy gradually retired from the hospital and in 2014 it was sold and became privately owned.
