Mr Brian Stephenson’s mission to Senegal, West Africa
Date Posted: 7th February 2023
We are delighted to share that Mr Brian Stephenson, Consultant General and Groin Hernia Surgeon, was asked to join a group of Urologists and Reconstructive Surgeons in Senegal, West Africa. The reason for the visit was to teach and train urological colleagues the benefits of trans-perineal prostatic biopsies (as opposed to transrectal).
Mr Stephenson taught colleges about several aspects of Urological surgery and the cost effectiveness of mosquito net mesh in the groin area. During his time in Senegal, Mr Stephenson was able to successfully perform 12 hernia repairs (one ventral) over just three days. All par one procedure was performed using spinal anaesthesia. Mr Stephenson was also able to leave 30 prosthetics which will be a huge help to the hospital and surgeons moving forward.
Despite Mr Stephenson’s suitcase being stranded in Madrid upon arrival, he received the most generous hospitality and hopes to return to Senegal in the future to carry out further work. Mr Stephenson gives a special thanks to Professor Serigne Magueye Gueye for making this fantastic trip happen.
St Joseph’s are pleased to hear of Mr Stephenson impressive work and look forward to hearing more, in the near future.
