Professional bio

Rhianon is an NHS Consultant Ophthalmologist within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and carries out her private work at St Joseph’s Hospital.

Rhianon graduated from Medicine with honours from the University of Wales College of Medicine where she studied as a mature student. Her decision to pursue a medical career was made whilst working towards a PhD in Ocular blood flow in Diabetes in the School of Optometry and Vision Science at Cardiff University where she had also qualified with a degree in Optometry in 1997.

Her specialist training in Ophthalmology was carried out across departments in South Wales covering all sub-specialties. On completion of training and achieving specialist registration with the GMC and Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, Rhianon Undertook a Fellowship in Medical Retina and Uveitis at Bristol Eye Hospital. Rhianon’s subspecialty area of interest is Medical Retina (e.g. Macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal vein occlusion) and cataract surgery.  Rhianon was the first consultant within Aneurin Bevan to routinely carry out bilateral (both eyes) cataract surgery on the same day without a general anaesthetic.

During training, Rhianon won a Fight for Sight Grant for an Ophthalmic Trainee Research Network with collaborators across the UK and was also the NIHR trainee representative for Wales. This role has now developed into the NIHR Ophthalmology Lead for Wales as well as the Educational Research lead for the Ophthalmic training programme in Wales. Rhianon is also isLlywydd (vice president) of the Royal College in Wales and works closely with the Welsh Government and Optometric bodies in the development of eyecare policies across Wales.
