Shahid is a Welsh-born Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon at the Royal Gwent Hospital (Aneurin Bevan University Health Board).
He was educated in Cardiff throughout his life and completed his medical training at the University of Wales College of Medicine whilst also completing a further undergraduate degree at Imperial College where he developed and published software to create 3D cartilage wear maps from MRI scans of the knee.
He undertook his basic surgical training in the South West, based in Taunton and Bristol and in 2011 progressed to specialist surgical training on the Prestigious All Wales Orthopaedic Rotation.
Beyond this, between 2017-2018 he undertook specialist Lower limb reconstruction and Revision Arthroplasty fellowships at the world-renowned centres at Oswestry (The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital) and Oxford (The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre).
At Oxford, he was instrumental in establishing a regional MDT meeting for complex revision and infection cases referred internationally and throughout his senior training has also acted as a ‘critical incidents lead’ ensuring valuable lessons and reflections are attained from adverse clinical events.
He was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in 2018 with a specialist interest in Hip and Knee Reconstruction, revision arthroplasty, infection, peri-prosthetic trauma and patient outcomes.
He became the Regional Hip Lead in 2020 and has undertaken projects to rationalize and streamline implant use, establishing a subspecialty MDT forum and laying the foundations to implement a patient surgical app.
He offers vast teaching, media, leadership and management experience and plays an active role in medical education as a Clinical & Educational Supervisor and Mentor.
By maintaining an increasing management role and active undergraduate and post-graduate teaching responsibilities, allows him to promote his speciality and nurture the next generation of trainees.
Since completing his MBA at the London School of Commerce in 2020, he has developed an active interest in new ways of creating an efficient and effective healthcare service through Digital Health.
