Mr Ravi Nannapaneni is the senior Consultant Neurosurgeon in Cardiff who specialises in diseases and disorders of the nervous system including the brain, cervical and lumbar spine. He uses minimally invasive techniques and regularly undertakes surgery for complex intradural conditions including spinal tumours. His other areas of expertise include the management of hydrocephalus and brain tumours.
Mr Nannapaneni attended medical school at Visakhapatnam, India and did his basic surgical training at the prestigious Postgraduate Institute, Chandigarh. He undertook his neurosurgical training in the Northern Deanery at Newcastle and Middlesbrough. In 2004, Mr Nannapaneni was appointed as Consultant Neurosurgeon and Spinal Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales (NHS), Cardiff, with a remit to set up the Deep Brain Stimulation service for Wales.
Mr Nannapaneni regularly performs brain surgery for tumours, lumbar microdiscectomy, anterior cervical discectomy, cervical foramenotomy, disc replacement surgery, laminoplasty, spinal fixation and endoscopic & open brain surgery. He has undertaken fellowships in Spinal neurosurgery (Seattle, USA) and Skull Base surgery (Ljubljana, Slovenia).
He has over the years established multiple services in the NHS including endoscopic skull base and pituitary surgery, and complex spinal neurosurgery including spinal instrumentation and disc arthroplasty. He is the Clinical Governance lead for neurosciences and regularly overseas audits undertaken in the department, benchmarking best practise.
Mr Nannapaneni takes a highly active role in teaching and training medical students and junior doctors at different levels. He is an ATLS Instructor for over 20 years and helps train other Instructors. He is an examiner for the FRCS neurosurgical exit exam and was until recently a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Neurosurgery.

Mr Nannapaneni is an avid reader regularly reading two to four books a month. He likes travelling and tries to combine it with his love for Scuba diving. He is a keen golfer and has recently been learning to fly Piper Arrows.
Mr Nannapaneni is the Regional Officer for Mensa Wales and encourages students and colleagues to join, intending to make it cool for members to display their affiliation. He is also a member of the International Society for Philosophical Enquiry, an American High IQ club.
