I was appointed as a consultant surgeon to the Royal Gwent Hospital in 2008 and see my private patients at St Joseph's Hospital. I qualified from the University of Wales College Of Medicine in 1994 and experienced most of my surgical training throughout Wales. I undertook 2 years of research into the molecular biology of colorectal cancer at Swansea University and was awarded a MCh degree by thesis. I was successful in obtaining one of three available national laparoscopic colorectal fellowships and spent 6 months under the tutelage of Professor Peter Sagar at Leeds. Here I gained advanced skills in laparoscopic surgery for cancer and inflammatory bowel disease and also major open surgery for advanced pelvic cancer.
I am the Lead Clinician for Colorectal Surgery at Aneurin Bevan Health Board and am also lead for enhanced recovery after surgery and the emergency laparotomy audit lead.
I enjoy teaching medical students, nurses and junior doctors and am the Honorary Lecturer in Surgery to Cardiff University, where I also examine for Final MB.
Since 2011 I have been a member of the Court of Examiners for the MRCS exam of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
I have an interest in research and have been actively involved in publishing papers (see PubMed: GL Williams). I am the local principal investigator for many national surgical trials (eg FIAT, LACES, PPAC2, ROSSINI 2, EAGLE). I review papers for the journals Colorectal Disease and British Journal of Surgery. I am Associate Editor (subspeciality: colorectal surgery) for the journal Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
I sit on the Inflammatory Bowel Disease clinical advisory group of the Association of Coloproctology of GB&I and am the South Wales representative on the council of ACPGBI.
