Professional bio

Mr Perera graduated in the UK and then completed his foot and ankle surgery training in the USA and Ireland, working in some of the world’s top units. He won the top UK prize for foot and ankle surgical trainees in his year of completion and has received a number of international awards since becoming a consultant. He is widely published and is a sought-after teacher and speaker.

He has been a pioneer in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery, especially for bunion and toe procedures. He was one of the first in the world to perform the current generation technique, with only a small handful of surgeons, aside from the originators, who have as much experience in this as he does.

Mr Perera is passionate about sports and has integrated this into his professional practice, being also qualified in sports medicine as well as orthopaedics. In a sports medicine capacity, he has served as a team doctor at elite and international levels. As a sports foot and ankle surgeon, he has worked with a number of elite and international teams, including the England Women’s World Cup-winning rugby team. He has also treated athletes from abroad, including Olympic gold medallists.

He is on the board of the ankle and foot section of the European Society of Sports Medicine (ESSKSA), was a founding member of the International Ankle Instability Group, and has published numerous research papers in the field of sports injuries. He has been an invited guest speaker at more than a dozen international society meetings around the world.
