Dr Zahra Ahmed read Medicine at University College London graduating in 2001. She trained at various highly competitive and prestigious teaching hospitals, including St Johns Institute of Dermatology in London. She is an NHS Consultant Dermatologist practising in Wales since 2016, is a fellow of The Royal College of Physicians UK and represents the Consultants appointments committee in Wales. For many years, she has been actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education/training, over-seeing numerous trainees as an educational supervisor.
Additionally, she was awarded a BSc Honours in Biochemistry from University College London. Towards the end of her clinical training, as part of her PhD programme at The Wellcome Institute of Immunology at Cardiff University, she extensively researched HIV interactions and drug re-purposing for use in disease treatment or prevention. Her internationally recognised research work and publications led her to be awarded the highly prestigious Royal Society of Medicine Wesleyan Prize in 2016 for the best clinical trainee/scientist UK. She has also been awarded the WT Edwards Medal in 2015 by Cardiff Medical Society and awarded several other prizes during her career.
She has peer reviewed a multitude of scientific publications for a variety of international journals and has authored book chapters and lectured as an invited speaker nationally and internationally. Dr Ahmed is a fellow of The Royal College of Physicians, a member of The British Association of Dermatologists and a member of the British Society of Dermatological Surgery. She also serves as a scientific advisory board member to Mirzyme Therapeutics UK.
