Professional bio

Dr MacDonald graduated from Oxford University before junior doctor training in London (Hammersmith, Queens Square, Whittington/UCL, Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals). Formal adult cardiology training in the Oxford Postgraduate Deanery in the UK followed with additional training in paediatric cardiology and congenital interventional training fellowships at The Heart Hospital, London, and the Policlinico San Donato, Milan. He has over 20 years of experience of medicine and cardiology. He obtained a DPhil/ PhD in heart developmental genetics as a Wellcome Trust CVRI Prize Clinical Fellow during training.

His first substantive consultant post was in Adult Congenital Heart Disease and he also became Honorary Senior Lecturer in Cardiology at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, before moving to Barts Heart Centre, London in 2019 for greater structural and ACHD experience.
He moved out to work at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff in 2021, also becoming a Honorary Consultant at University Hospitals of Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.

Personal Profile

Dr MacDonalds enjoys cycling, running and taking his young children swimming, as well as playing traditional musical instruments.

He is medical lead for a charity offering heart screening for young Welsh sports people.

Clinical Outcomes

Approximately 2000 catheter procedures performed without significant mortality nor morbidity, regularly auditing practice and outcomes. Dr MacDonald keeps up to date by attending national and international conferences, reviewing for key cardiology journals, and being involved in studies.
