I was born in London and graduated from the University of Bristol in 1994. Most of my training has been in the UK, but I have practiced in New Zealand, France, and South Africa and am fluent in Polish and French.
My first consultant post was in Bristol but I was appointed to The Royal Gwent Hospital in 2006 as a gastroenterologist and went on to found the Gwent Liver Unit in 2012, which now comprises six consultant hepatologists.
I was Clinical Director for Medicine from 2012 - 2015 and Clinical Director for Gastroenterology and Hepatology from 2015 to 2020. I have also been Clinical lead for Endoscopy, Blood Bourne Viruses, and Hepatology during this time, and was involved in designing the gastroenterology service for the Clinical Futures program due to open in 2020 at the Grange Hospital.
I am a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology, Welsh Association of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy, British Association for the Study of the Liver, European Association for the Study of the Liver, British Society of Lifestyle Medicine.
My clinical interests have been in the management of general gastroenterological conditions, particularly the management of chronic liver disease, and in advanced therapeutic endoscopy. I am an accredited colonoscopist and endoscopist and trainer for ERCP. I design and lead courses for the training of trainee endoscopists and consultants in advanced therapeutic endoscopy and underwent a sabbatical in advanced endoscopic techniques in France in 2019.
Parallel to my interest in endoscopy has been the effects of lifestyle and behavioural change in the management of chronic conditions affecting both bowel and liver disease, using the combination of specialist clinical knowledge, dietetics, clinical psychology, and exercise therapy.
Investigations and procedures carried out include:
- Gastroscopy
- Oesophageal dilatation
