Professional bio

Professor Mohammed Muhtaseb (FRCOphth) is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in the NHS based in South Wales, with special expertise in Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He holds full specialist registration with the General Medical Council

Professor Muhtaseb graduated with Distinction from St George’s Hospital Medical School, the University of London in 1995 and completed his ophthalmology training in London. Having trained in various of London’s prestigious teaching hospitals, he went on to complete three separate sub-speciality training fellowships in each of Cornea Surgery, Refractive Surgery, and Medical Ophthalmology / Neuro-ophthalmology.

He moved to South Wales in 2006 to take up his Consultant position and has continuously strived to establish and develop new services for his patients since that time.

Professor Muhtaseb maintains his enthusiasm for research and supervises trainee doctors undertaking research. He has published the results of his clinical research widely in the peer-reviewed literature and is a reviewer for many prestigious journals. He has presented his work to international conference audiences in Europe, Asia and the USA. He has also been an invited speaker at international conferences, where he shares his experiences in the use of innovative technologies.

He was recently a Visiting Professor at the University of South Wales and a provider of continuing education and training for optometrists outside of the MSc course over a 5 year period.

Professor Muhtaseb uses a variety of state-of-the-art lens implants to help you achieve your desired outcome after surgery. These are explained below:

Monofocal lens implants
•    Provide vision at either distance or near, with glasses being required at other times

Monofocal toric lens implants
•    Toric lenses correct astigmatism at the time of surgery, providing better-unaided vision after the treatment is completed

Mono-Enhanced lens implants
•    Provide vision at either distance or mid-range (such as using a computer or browsing in the shops), with glasses being required for the small print in the mid-range and for reading

Multifocal lens implants
•    As well as excellent distance vision, these lenses provide greater near reading and mid-range vision (such as using a computer or browsing in the shops), without the need for glasses

Multifocal toric lens implants
•    For excellent vision at distance, mid-range and near, as well as correcting astigmatism at the same time. Correcting astigmatism at the time of surgery is of particular importance when a multifocal lens implant is planned.

Special Clinical Interests

•    Micro-incision cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange,
•    Multifocal lens implants,
•    Toric lens implants,
•    Piggyback lens implants,
•    Keratoconus management including Corneal Collagen Crosslinking,
•    Corneal transplant surgery.

What is astigmatism, and how does it affect vision?

Astigmatism is an asymmetry in the curve of the cornea, at the front of the eye. It makes the vision blurred, or “fuzzy” but can be corrected at the time of cataract surgery by using a premium TORIC lens implant.

These pictures illustrate the effect of astigmatism on the vision and how a toric lens could help maximise the result of cataract surgery.

Piggyback lens implants

If you have already had cataract surgery and still need glasses to see clearly in the distance or for reading, or both, a Piggyback lens implant can provide distance and reading vision without the need for glasses.

•    Monofocal Piggyback Lens – corrects your distance spectacle prescription
•    Multifocal Piggyback Lens – gives better reading vision without needing glasses and can correct a distance spectacle prescription at the same time, if needed
•    Toric Piggyback Lens – corrects astigmatism as well as distance and near vision, as needed

Macular Degeneration

Central vision is cloudy with dark patches, reading is difficult, and you may be using magnifiers or other low vision aids to assist with reading.
After any cataract has been removed, persistent difficulty with reading may be improved with the SML implanted lens.

The Scharioth Macular Lens (SML) is a piggyback lens that can improve reading vision and reduce the need to use magnifiers and other low vision aid devices.  The SML may benefit patients suffering from macular disorders such as age-related macular degeneration and others. It is sometimes known as the magnifying lens in the eye.

Research Interests

•    Cataract risk stratification, risk mitigation, and risk management,
•    Outcomes of multifocal lens implants in eyes previously treated by Lasik,
•    Performance of new multifocal lens implants,
•    Patient-reported outcomes measures in cataract surgery,
•    Results of piggyback lens implants.
