Professional bio

I am a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport. Before being persuaded to move to Wales I worked at The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (2011-2016) and prior to this I was A/Professor and Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the University of Otago, Christchurch School of Medicine, New Zealand for 7 years. In New Zealand I served on the Clinical Board and Credentialing Committee of The Canterbury District Health Board and was a founding Director of a successful Vascular Private Practice; Christchurch Vascular Group.

I have a strong interest and track record in vascular surgical education and training. I have been a faculty member on many vascular surgical training courses in the UK, Europe and Australasia. I sat on The Advisory Board of The Academy of Surgical Educators at The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and currently sit on the Vascular Speciality Advisory Committee to The Joint Committee on Surgical Training.

My primary medical degree (1991) and my Doctorate (2001) were awarded by The University of Bristol. I completed my vascular training in the Southwest of England and spent a fellowship year at The Royal Northshore Hospital in Sydney. I became a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2003, a Fellow of The European Board of Vascular Surgery in 2005 and a Fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (vascular) in 2008.

Special Clinical Interests

David has in excess of 20 years of experience caring for and treating patients with varicose veins and other vascular problems.

He is fully credentialed in both open and endovascular procedures and submits all his operative data to The National Vascular Registry.

David established a service for patients wanting Totally Implantable Venous Access Devices (“port a caths”) in New Zealand and Scotland.

He has appeared on the BBC One Show explaining Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) and has been interviewed on National Radio.

David has taught many colleagues to perform endovascular procedures including  Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) and Endovenous Ablation Therapy (Endovenous Laser Therapy EVLT & Radiofrequency Ablation RFA of Varicose Veins) and Ultrasound Guided Injection Foam Sclerotherapy (UGS).

He has performed many hundreds of varicose vein procedures and is delighted to offer most varicose vein treatments under local anaesthetic as “walk in walk out” procedures at St Joseph’s Hospital, Newport.

David’s practice is unique in Wales offering a “one-stop” assessment of patients with varicose veins. This involves clinical assessment followed by duplex ultrasound examination of the leg veins.

This means that he can discuss and recommend tailor made varicose vein treatments to suit you, at your first appointment. David recognises that most of his patients have busy lives and this “one stop shop” avoids unnecessary, and expensive, repeat visits to hospital.

Long term venous access is essential for some medical treatments like chemotherapy. Port a caths or totally implantable venous access devices (TIVADs) allow patients to lead as normal as life as possible while undergoing treatment and have less complications than other venous access devices like Hickman lines.

David’s MD Thesis was on the management of patients with intermittent claudication (hardening of the arteries in the legs) and he has maintained a keen interest on this topic since. He has also published on and led quality improvement projects on the management of carotid artery disease.
